Electrical panel brands found in Las Vegas homes

Below is the same information the identifier above gives you, in written form. Las Vegas housing stock clusters into distinct waves, and the panel brand tells you which wave your house belongs to. The older core has 1960s and 70s builds where the problem brands were installed. The enormous build-out from roughly 1995 to 2007 across Summerlin, Spring Valley, Enterprise, Anthem and Aliante has modern, safe panels that were sized for a household that didn't charge a car overnight. Those two situations need completely different work.

Zinsco and Sylvania-Zinsco panels

Replacement recommended. Zinsco panels were never officially recalled, but many insurers and home inspectors in Nevada flag them.

Zinsco panels were installed from the 1930s into the late 1970s and are identified by red, blue and green breaker handles in the same panel, a color scheme no modern manufacturer uses. The design has a known weakness: breakers clip onto an aluminum bus bar that can corrode and overheat. Breakers have been found melted onto the bus or unable to trip on an overload, meaning the panel appears to be protecting the house while it is not. Replacement parts are no longer manufactured. In the Las Vegas valley these appear in the older core around Charleston, the Huntridge area, parts of North Las Vegas and older Paradise, typically on 60 to 100 amp services.

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels

Replacement recommended. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers were never officially recalled, despite widespread claims otherwise.

Federal Pacific panels were installed from the 1950s through the early 1980s. The breakers are dark with a small red or orange marking at the end of the handle, and the word Stab-Lok appears on the breakers or panel label. Independent testing has repeatedly found that Stab-Lok breakers fail to trip under overload at far higher rates than breakers from other manufacturers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission investigated in the early 1980s and closed the case without ordering a recall, citing cost and the difficulty of proving a defect. A later class action in New Jersey found the company had misrepresented compliance with UL testing standards. These are common in Las Vegas homes built from the 1960s through the early 1980s, including older Paradise, Winchester and east valley stock.

Pushmatic and Bulldog panels

Not urgent, but obsolete. Worth an inspection before you add any load.

Pushmatic panels, also branded Bulldog or ITE, date mostly from the 1950s through the 1970s and use flat rectangular push buttons instead of toggle switches, usually in a brass or tan finish. Pushmatic does not carry the failure-to-trip reputation of Zinsco or Federal Pacific. The problem is obsolescence: mechanisms stiffen with age and can become slow to trip, there is no visible flag showing which breaker tripped, replacement breakers are scarce and expensive, and modern arc-fault and ground-fault breakers cannot be added. These appear in mid-century Las Vegas homes and some older downtown commercial buildings, usually on a 100-amp or smaller service.

Fuse boxes

Undersized for a modern Las Vegas home. Usually requires a full service upgrade, not just a panel swap.

Fuse boxes generally predate 1960 and use round screw-in fuses rather than breakers. An intact fuse box with correctly sized fuses is not inherently unsafe, since fuses interrupt current reliably. Two problems make them unworkable now. Capacity is the first: most are 60 amps total, which was adequate for a house with a swamp cooler and no dishwasher but is nowhere near enough for central air conditioning. The second is fuse substitution, where a 30-amp fuse is installed on a circuit rated for 15 amps, allowing wiring in the walls to overheat with no protection. That substitution is extremely common in panels this old and represents a genuine fire risk. Lenders and insurers frequently require an upgrade. In the valley, fuse boxes are rare in main dwellings but common in detached garages, well houses and older mobile home service equipment.

Challenger panels

Judge by condition, not brand. Have the bus bar and breaker models inspected before adding load.

Challenger panels date from the mid-1980s into the early 1990s and look much like current panels, so identification depends on the name on the door or label. Certain Challenger breakers have a history of overheating at the bus bar connection and of nuisance or failed tripping, and some were covered by a manufacturer replacement program. Many Challenger panels are also operating without incident. An electrician checking for heat discoloration at the bus, loose connections, and which specific breaker models are installed can determine whether yours is a concern. These fit the Las Vegas build wave of the late 1980s and early 1990s, including parts of Green Valley, older Spring Valley, and the first phases of the northwest, typically on 100 or 125 amp services.

Square D QO and Homeline panels

Safe and current. If this is your panel you do not need a new one.

Square D is still manufactured and is extremely common in Las Vegas homes built from the 1990s onward. The QO line has slim handles with a small orange trip indicator; Homeline is the builder-grade line and looks similar without the flag. Square D is one of the most respected panel lines in the trade, breakers are stocked at every local supply house, and both AFCI and GFCI breakers are made for it. This is the panel in a large share of the valley's 1995 to 2007 build-out. The limitation is almost never the panel's quality but the size of the service behind it: many of these homes were built with 125 or 150 amp service, comfortable as designed but tight once a Level 2 EV charger is added to a summer air conditioning load. Homes with rooftop solar may already be using the spare capacity at the top of the bus for the interconnection.

Eaton and Cutler-Hammer panels

Safe and current. A good starting point for adding capacity.

Eaton panels carry Cutler-Hammer branding on older installations and Eaton on newer ones. The BR series has black breakers with white markings; the CH series is the premium line with distinctive tan or bronze breakers. This is a well-supported current line with no design problems of the kind affecting the older brands, and all modern protective breakers are available for it. These are widely used across newer Las Vegas construction and in panel replacements done over the last twenty years. The questions that determine whether you can add a charger or a second AC system are how many breaker spaces are open, what the main breaker is rated at, and your existing summer load.

Siemens, Murray and GE panels

Safe and current. No systemic safety issue in any of the three.

Siemens, Murray and GE panels are grouped together because Murray panels are manufactured by Siemens and the breakers interchange. Older units may be branded ITE or Gould. All are legitimate current-production lines, breakers are stocked locally, and arc-fault and ground-fault versions are available. These are very common in valley tract homes from the mid-1990s through the 2000s, often alongside Square D depending on the builder's supplier. As with the other modern panels, available breaker spaces and total service size determine whether an EV charger, casita, spa or second air conditioning system will fit.

How much electrical service do you have?

The single largest breaker in the panel, usually sitting alone at the top or bottom, is the main breaker, and the number printed on it is your service size. A 100-amp service is workable for a house without much electric load, but in Las Vegas a 4- or 5-ton air conditioner plus a car charger will usually exceed it. A 125-amp service is very common in valley tract homes and is comfortable as built but tight once you add a Level 2 charger, a spa, or a second AC system, though this is often solvable with load management rather than a full upgrade. A 150-amp service has reasonable headroom and a single Level 2 charger is frequently workable depending on air conditioning tonnage, pool equipment and whether water heating is gas or electric. A 200-amp service is sufficient for most residential additions, at which point open breaker spaces rather than capacity become the limiting factor.

Why the answer is different in Las Vegas

Panel capacity in the Las Vegas valley is dominated by air conditioning. A compressor running nearly continuously against a design temperature above 105 degrees behaves very differently from a heating load in a cold climate, and it occupies capacity during exactly the hours when someone would otherwise be charging a vehicle. Combine that with housing stock that skews heavily toward 1990s and 2000s tract construction on 125 and 150 amp services, and the most common electrical question in the valley is not whether the panel is dangerous but whether it has room. Panel and service upgrades in Clark County require a permit and, for service changes, coordination with NV Energy.
